The persona in Kenneth Rexroth’s poem “Doubled Mirrors” carries a flashlight as he (I assume the speaker is male) walks along a country road on an autumn night. As he passes an old orchard, he hears something “rustling and grunting” in the trees. He shines his light into the branches and discovers “Two raccoons with acrid pear Juice and saliva drooling From their mouths….” The raccoons “stare back at me, Their eyes deep sponges of light. They know me and do not run Away.”
