A boy in seventh grade may know that popularity requires that he
not pay attention and talk in class, not heed the teacher, make
jokes all day, and goof around. Still, he might prefer being a nerd,
because he doesn’t like doing all that and chooses to act as he wants, not
to be bad. But by the start of eighth grade, he may be fed up with being
pushed around and decide to change, deliberately defying adult authority,
not associating openly with his nerdy friends, and picking fights with
younger students. At the end of eighth grade, he might say everyone likes
him and he’s among the top 10 popular kids.
