A COUPLE of years ago, in
one of the “idea of the university”
seminars I regularly
direct for professional staff, I
spoke with a young student-recruiter
from the admissions office
who enthusiastically agreed
with everything I had to say in
favor of the aims and practices of
liberal education, but who also
conceded that explaining them
formed no substantial portion of
her standard recruitment pitch
for prospective students and their
parents.
