Shop Teachers' Lounge Alchemy of Writing

Only about one student in four in grades 4, 8, and 12 writes at or above the “proficient” level. About four out of five in these grades write at or above the “basic” level, and only one student in a hundred writes at an “advanced” level. These figures, from the latest findings of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), are part of “The Neglected ‘R’: The Need for a Writing Revolution,” issued in April by the National Commission on Writing in America’s Schools and Colleges, a panel organized in September 2002 by The College Board.
